Jazz. I have some rudimentary coding skills. Do you think you could teach me to hack this comm system? Would you be willing to? I am a fast learner and well discipline. Your efforts would not be wasted.

Willing? Always.

Though I really cannot say if I even can teach it to you, as it's all very instinctive to me. But there's nothing that says we cannot at least try.

By the way, do you have some slicer goggles lying around somewhere?

[OOC: is this conversation during the time Strix and Tristan are in Asgard?]

Excellent. Thank you.

If you're speaking of that funny looking headgear that Tristan always seems to have, then no, I haven't seen them recently.

((ooc; I guess so? Lets just assume yes for now, I suppose))

[OOC: ok. That's probably for the best anyway.]

Then we need to look for some other way to get you into an interface, as holo-gear is not the best thing for you use. Tristan's goggles aren't even functional.

Do you think you could understand it when I show you my interface on a flatscreen?

Couldn't I just use my own computer?

[info]silverknight

That's what I meant.

So, could you understand it when I show you my in-built interface on your computer screen? Because I don't know any other way to let you try to learn how I do it.

I think so. You're probably going to have to identify some stuff for me.

[OOC: here is a short vid from the life action TF movie. so that you can better imagine what I'm talking about. You can see through the yes of a bot for a moment.]

Ok.

*sends interface data, contact extablished*

If everything went right you should now be able to see my interface.

Oyah. This is going to be fun -_-'

Ok. I think I get a little bit of it. Let's start with the basics, yeah?

Prepare for the best ride you've ever had, princess.

You see the 'graphics' that surround the picture like the borders of an old television set? Those are the internal controls.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]strix
2008-07-01 08:07 pm UTC (link)
Right. So it's a graphic interface, kind of like Visual Basic? Internal controls. What does that mean?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]silverknight
2008-07-01 09:35 pm UTC (link)
It's as much a graphic interface as your own two eyes are for you.

That's mostly for medics only, even though all of us can get into these sub-routines. It's where we can tweak our body modifications. Don't know how it works; I recon it's comparable to your brain. One place where all the signals go through.

We'll have to go into the subconscious routines. That's behind the little squiggle with the triangle and the icon that looks like the sign for Starfleet Command.

[info]strix

I can't screw up and hurt you, right? This is just a dummy interface.

*touches the little squiggle with the triangle*

((<---doesn't know what to expect))

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]silverknight
2008-07-01 11:11 pm UTC (link)
Nah, there's nothing to hurt.

Even if it weren't just a sim, you wouldn't be able to hurt anything. The stuff that keeps us online is hardwired into our sparks. Nothing but a medic with a direct hardline into my system can touch it.

Now that we're within the halls of subconsious dreaming, you'll see many windows with text in it. I don't know if you can read it, but all that you can see now are all the comm line codes active at the moment.

The text is dreadfully archaic to me and there doesn't come any sound through on my end. If I remember right, I told you this some time ago.

If you look at the window to your right, the one blinking in blue, you'll see that every entry is marked the same - even those coded for absolute privacy. That's your comm line, by the way.

Erm. Well, this is a tad overwhelming -_-'

So that is the actual code we're looking at? Is it in its compiled state, or in a decompiled state?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]silverknight
2008-07-02 01:46 am UTC (link)
This is as simple as I'm able to give you. It's just text, in your language by the way - as you've written it, shown in the most archaic letter system my people ever invented.

Fifteen letters including numbers, used to write down text that's not even spoken in my own language.

You cannot imagine how much I miss my old comm lines.

*closes every window but the one showing Strix' comm line, opens another window so that only two windows are open*

As you can see here, our more modern script is far more easy to read. 7.3 trillion signs uses on average, is makes coding so simple...

But I have the feeling contemporary coding is not what you want to see at the moment.

Bloody freakin Christ and a bloody chracker. 7.3 trillion!

Dear gods, I'm never-

No. This will just take time. Lots of time.

Okay. 15 characters. This is not like binary at all. Do they each have a special value?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]silverknight
2008-07-02 12:42 pm UTC (link)
It can be a bit much for someone who didn't grow up using it, yes.

Yes, every character has a special value. It's like your own letter systems in this way. Though I have the feeling the writing is more similar to pictogram writings like Chinese, than any other Earth language.

*shows one quiggle in particular*

For example, this one can mean 'third' as is husband, 'death' as in there is a spark transplant needed, 'love' as in having killed your bonded to protect yourself from betrayal, 'sun' as in depleted energy sourse, the number 1 as in 1 thousand vorns spent waiting for a message, 'blood' as in organic matter used for vivisection, 'heir' as in infanticide done my a grandparent and 'poetry' as in destruction found at a madman's hand.

As you see, modern script is far more accurate.

Okay. I can get that. I'm fluent in most Asaiatic dialects. What you're describing doesn't sound very different from that.

Where do we go from here?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]silverknight
2008-07-02 08:58 pm UTC (link)
I think you need to see what and how it changes when a new message arrives.

It is as difficult to explain what happens then as it would probably be for you to explain why your heart chose to beat in exactly that rhythm it curently has. After all, I'm no hacker. I haven't learned how to read spark codes.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]strix

So we'll wait for a message. Is there anything I'm watching for in particular?

What does this eye shaped squiggle mean?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]silverknight
2008-07-02 09:59 pm UTC (link)
Probably for a difference in the parameters.

End. It means end, like the last moment of silence before a spark enters the ether.

It shows that what's coming in is on an open channel, but if you look here...

*indicates one simple sign within a mass of signs*

That says private channel.

So, you see. It's pretty easy, too easy sometimes, to just overlook this little thing and proceed as if on an open channel.

*opens another window showing more complex code, a large part is in another colour to set it apart*

This is how my people mark stuff that's on a closed channel. See that we don't use the sign that our comm system here uses.

[info]strix

....

Are you saying that you accidenlty read private comm channels sometimes?

[info]silverknight
2008-07-03 10:40 pm UTC (link)
That's what I said, yep.

My people might not believe in privacy, but that does not mean we do not understand this need in others.

You should know better than that. This is not about fun or finesse. This is about war, and about winning. Those things come first. Where is your sense?

Comm lines can be faked.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]strix

This is entirely true, but it is better to read it and weigh it out for ourselves than to not know at all.

Why do you think I sent dear Tristan out for a little hands-on infiltration? What better way to weed out the fakes than being there and listening?

What else do you want to know?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]strix

So if I want to do this from my own interface, will it look the same way?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]silverknight
2008-07-07 12:36 pm UTC (link)
Somewhat, I think. Though the code'll probably use letters you can read better than what I get. But be prepared for something archaic. I have the feeling these lines like dead languages.

2008-07-07 07:51 pm UTC (link)
I happen to have a knack for dead languages. Heh.

Give me some time to familiarize myself with the code's structure. I am sure I will have more questions.

That's a good thing then. Me, with everything that's older than three generations before my time, I'm just no good with it.

I'll be waiting.
